Read it Big is built with a simple premise: your data is yours. We do not want it, we do not see it, and we do not store it. This policy explains the few cases where any data is processed at all, and exactly what each one contains.
The data controller is Enrico Frascati, the independent developer of Read it Big. For anything in this policy, write to [email protected].
Your screen content: the app requires the "Screen Recording" permission to function. It is used exclusively to capture the window under your pointer and display it back to you, magnified. Nothing is ever saved, recorded to disk, or transmitted over any network. All processing happens in memory, on your Mac, and is discarded instantly.
The trigger gesture: the app also asks for the "Accessibility" permission. It uses it only to detect your chosen modifier key, the trackpad pinch and the optional keyboard shortcut. It never reads what you type.
A note about the macOS reminder: every so often macOS will tell you that Read it Big has accessed your screen a certain number of times. That number is simply how many times you magnified something: the app opens the capture only while the lens is on screen and closes it straight after, instead of watching continuously. We could make that number almost disappear by keeping the capture running, but that would mean the app is always looking, and we would rather it did not. Nothing it sees ever leaves your Mac.
The 14-day trial runs entirely on your Mac: no account, no registration, nothing is sent anywhere. When you activate a purchased license, the app sends only your license key to Gumroad to verify it. No hardware identifier is transmitted; the per-license device limit is enforced by Gumroad’s own activation counter. Your key and the email tied to your purchase are stored locally in the macOS Keychain, and the license is re-checked with Gumroad from time to time.
On first launch the app asks whether you want to share anonymous usage statistics. If you decline, nothing is ever sent. If you accept, the app sends a one-time installation ping (a random installation identifier, app version, macOS version, system language and processor type) and at most one ping per day of use (the same random identifier, app version and a count of zoom sessions). Never the contents of your screen, never window titles, never the names of the apps you magnify. Like any web request, these pings reach our server with your IP address, which we only ever look at in aggregate. You can turn statistics off at any time in Preferences > Privacy.
The app periodically checks readitbig.app for updates (via the open-source Sparkle framework). This is a standard web request; it includes no personal information.
"Send feedback" prepares an email in your own mail app with the app’s diagnostic log attached. The log can include the titles of windows you magnified, the names of the apps involved and, if you activated a license, the email tied to it. You can read and edit everything before sending; nothing leaves your Mac unless you hit Send.
If you sign up for the Eye Comfort Guide or the newsletter, your email address is stored by SendFox after a double opt-in confirmation. We use it only to send you the guide and the occasional updates about Read it Big, and announcements about new professional tools we develop. You can unsubscribe at any time with a single click, in every email.
readitbig.app is a static site: no analytics scripts, no advertising, no tracking cookies from us. Our server keeps standard web logs (IP address, browser type), which we use in aggregate to count visits and downloads. The site is served through Cloudflare, which may set strictly necessary security cookies of its own.
Where these providers process data outside the EU, they do so under their own standard contractual safeguards. We never sell your data, to anyone, for any reason.
Under the GDPR and similar laws you can ask for access, correction, deletion or a copy of any personal data we hold, object to its processing, and withdraw any consent at any time (the statistics toggle in Preferences, the unsubscribe link in every email). Write to [email protected] and we will sort it out. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
If we change this policy, the new version will be posted here with the date updated above.
